I’d heard great things about the (mostly) one-woman Broadway show What The Constitution Means To Me, and I was truly sad I wasn’t about to make it to NYC to see it in person before it closed. So I was thrilled when I found out that Amazon Prime was releasing a filmed version of Heidi Schreck’s Pulitzer-nominated play, and it did not disappoint.
I purposely went into the show knowing as little as possible and I think I was better off for it (unlike Jocelyn, I hate being spoiled for things), so I’m not going to reveal too much about it, but here’s VERY basic explanation: As a teenager, Schreck would travel around country giving speeches about what the US constitution meant to her so that she could win prize money for college; now, as an adult, she recreates that speech but also examines what the constitution means to her now, and also what she means to the constitution. There’s obviously a lot more to it and things get more complex from there, but that’s where the play jumps off from.
It’s an excellent show and a great performance from Schreck — she’s funny, vulnerable, generous, and thoughtful, and she also uses her platform to highlight the talents of other excellent performers. The audience (and I) got quite emotional during points of the show, and Schreck also does a great job of pulling them (and us) into the narrative she’s presenting. The special is 105 minutes and she barely takes a break the entire time (and she’s on stage for the whole thing!), which is a feat unto itself.
Again, I don’t want to spoil too much for you, but I really loved What The Constitution Means To Me and you should watch it, too.
That’s all for me today, gorgeous. Talk to you soon.
Love,
Kat

I am so excited to watch this - I was lucky enough to see it live in NYC, and it was so powerful. I bought a “We all belong in the Preamble” souvenir shirt. I’m really glad you liked it!
