🚨🚨🚨This newsletter includes spoilers for the first season and second season of The Boys, up to and including Season 2, Episode 5. 🚨🚨🚨
I’ve been enjoying the second season of The Boys, although I can’t help but feel like the personification of this show would be a 13-year-old boy dressed in Hot Topic gear, sneering at you and saying, “Hey, man, what if superheroes were BAD?!?!?!?” And then Damon Lindelof and the rest of the crew of the Watchmen TV show just sigh and go back to polishing their Emmys.
I think the superhero part of the show is by far the more interesting part, and it’s great to see Aya Cash (who was so amazing on You’re The Worst) sink her teeth into the evil character of Stormfront. Antony Starr was the main thing that made Season 1 worth watching, and seeing those two play off each other in Season 2 has been a real treat. I knew it was only a matter of time until they slept together, and their destructive sex scene at the end of Episode 5 didn’t disappoint. (That said, this whole season needed content warnings, because oof to the end of Season 2, Episode 3. Using the slaughtering of people of colour to advance Stormfront’s character development is not a good look.)
I think the show’s done some good course correcting with The Deep — my understanding is that Chace Crawford’s character was a combination of two characters from the graphic novel, which meant that in the first season, The Deep both sexually assaulted a woman and became the goofy loser that we’re meant to feel bad for. Getting him drawn into a Scientology-esque cult this season is an interesting turn.
Ultimately, though, I feel like the actual boys of The Boys are the least interesting part. I think Billy kinda sucks — he’s supposed to, but I also just don’t find him very compelling. Huey is a nothing character to me, and if I want to see Jack Quaid in something, I’ll rewatch him being cute in Plus One. As much as I love Karen Fukuhara, Kamiko’s storyline feels like an afterthought most of the time, and don’t even get me started on how little I care about what happens to Frenchie.
How do y’all feel about The Boys?
The Emmys
Believe it or not, I actually didn’t watch The Emmys on Sunday. (I don’t have cable! I stream and download basically everything.) I did watch the updates on Twitter, though, and I’m pretty happy with the winners this year. As a Canadian, I’m obviously thrilled that Schitt’s Creek swept the comedy awards, but it’s also just a great, sweet show that deserves all its success.
I’m also happy about Succession and Watchmen getting so much love, plus it’s great that Zendaya took home the Best Actress in a Drama for Euphoria. I don’t watch Ozark but I do like Julia Garner, so good for her for winning two Supporting Actress awards in a row, and while Morning Show was all over the place in terms of quality, Billy Crudup was absolutely the best part of the show, so his Supporting Actor award is well deserved.
I love TV, I hope it stays forever.
That’s all for me today, gorgeous. Talk to you soon!
Love,
Kat

Kat I have so many thoughts about The Boys. I binged the entire thing very quickly after seeing Watchmen and it's objectively not that good and is definitely messed up in so many ways (I guess that is the point?) but also I really enjoy seeing how wild things get??? I want more interesting celeb culture stuff with the power things but also its so much spectacle. Karl Urban is still hot even though I want him to be less mean. I initially took Stormfront to be a critique of White Feminism but it was so horrific to watch. Thank you for summing up how I feel!
