The fourth season of "Search Party" is even weirder, but still great
đ¨ Spoiler warning: This post contains spoilers for all four seasons of Search Party â I *HIGHLY* recommend watching the show before reading any of this. đ¨
Iâve been a big fan of the show Search Party since it debuted in 2016 â itâs a black comedy/mystery starring Alia Shawkat about a group of self-obsessed millennials who (in the first season) also become obsessed with finding a missing girl they went to college with. Dory, Shawkatâs character, particularly goes through quite the evolution over the years, from a disillusioned girl looking for anything to give her life purpose, to a terrified woman trying to avoid being caught for murder, to a manipulative sociopath willing to do anything to avoid a guilty plea, to now, in Season 4, being forced to contend with the harsh realities about herself while also being held captive by an unstable fan.
With the kidnapping cliffhanger at the end of Season 3, I was a little worried Search Party might have gone too far in the âweirdâ direction â and honestly Iâm not sure if it did or it didnât. Yes, itâs all very weird (Doryâs captor, Chip, has recreated her entire New York apartment but literally everything is made out of felt or wool), but it all somehow gels because of the skill and chemistry with the always-excellent Shawkat and Cole Escola. Thereâs definitely a lot of âhow much is Cole lying about and how much is actually the truth?â that happens throughout the season, and as the plot expands and we begin to learn a bit more about his background, the answers to those questions get a bit murkier.
Unsurprisingly, John Early and Meredith Hagner, who play Doryâs friends Elliott and Portia, get to do some incredible comedic work throughout the season â Elliott decides to make himself over as a hard-right news pundit (because of money, of course), while Portia is cast as Dory in the movie adaptation of the murder case (and isnât very good). I have no issues with John Reynolds as Drew, Doryâs ex, but I get the feeling the show is struggling with how to make Drew as interesting to watch as the other three in the main cast.
The first three seasons of Search Party were on TBS while Season 4 was on HBO Max, and while it hasnât been renewed for a fifth season (yet, I hope), the fourth season finale somehow provides both a satisfying wrap-up and a cliffhanger. Itâs impressive as hell.
If youâre in Canada, Search Party isnât on Crave, so youâll have to find âmethodsâ to watch it, that I of course do not condone and did not use myself.
