Stuff I saw on the internet last week
Happy Monday! Time again to round up a bunch of tweets, reddit posts, videos, and other internet things I saw last week that you should see, too.
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
First off, here’s the link to Jacob Blake’s GoFundMe page; I hope you’ll consider donating. If you live in Canada, please donate to your chapter of Black Lives Matter (if you’re outside of Canada, look up your local chapter and give to them). As well, Canadians, please donate to the Black Health Alliance, a charity dedicated to improving the healthcare and well-being of the Black Community (if you’re outside of Canada, look up local organizations dedicated to improving Black lives). Set up recurring donations if you can!
Please write and call your local representatives to demand that they defund and dismantle the police, and keep doing it until they listen. Black lives matter and we can’t stop until the police stop murdering members of the Black community.
Last week’s episode of my podcast is about The Da Vinci Code, which is a very, very stinky movie that both Jocelyn and I hated. (You can subscribe to I Hate It But I Love It in all the usual places, including Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, and Pocket Casts.)
Like everyone else in the world, I’m so shocked and so, so sad about the death of Chadwick Boseman. He was a lovely man and a great actor, and to think of all the good he did — especially in the last few years, when he was simultaneously and secretly battling cancer.
Obviously there are too many amazing Chad Boseman moments to list, so I’ll just choose this one: one of the “Black Jeopardy!” sketches from SNL, with Boseman playing his Marvel alter ego T’Challa:
TWEETS!
Now that is some confidence:
I would have done the same:
But seriously, cats, what’s your problem? LEMME DOOOOO ITTTTT:
I recently drank a pop in the park and wasps were flying around I had basically this exact fear:
At last:
It’s funny because it’s sad and true:
And you thought Murdoch Mysteries inventing the fax machine was bonkers (that’s a reference just for my Canadian peeps):
COMEDY!
Jocelyn’s sweet baboo Jon Blair is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met, and he’s been using quarantine to film a one-man sketch show in their apartment and it’s brilliant. It’s called Now More Than Ever, and the second episode came out and it’s brilliant. You should watch it.
REDDIT!
Happy anniversary, I guess?
When the time came to exchange gifts, he gleefully opened his Apple Watch and began setting it up. I figured I’m all the excitement he forgot to give me my gift so I gently prodded him. He told me to check reddit.
Ladies and gentlemen, my husband GILDED me 24 times as an anniversary gift. He’s a bit of a jokester, so I figured my real gift was coming.
But Reddit, it’s been a week.
Yelling isn’t the “male way” of handling arguments; it’s abusive and terrifying, you fucking dick:
We got into a raised voices back and forth last night (on both sides) when she told me that yelling when you’re frustrated is wrong (the traditionally male way), and talking things out is right (the traditionally female way), and “everyone knows that”. I kept telling her it’s a difference of opinion and neither is better or worse, just different. She kept pushing me about it and finally I snapped and told her that insisting that the female way of doing something is better than the male way is sexist, and she’s a sexist if she thinks that and tries to force me to handle disagreements that way. She says I’m out of line to call her a sexist just because she’s “sick of being yelled at” but I’m sick of being told that the way I do things is wrong just because I’m a man and because I have a deep voice.
Here’s this week’s edition of “your kids are gonna grow up and never talk to you again”:
my older daughter has some very strict boundaries on what her obligations are as a child and says she owes us nothing. Which is true but my husband and I had a serious talk about everything that happened and decided perhaps it’s in our best interests to take older daughter’s tuition/wedding money and save it for the new baby and in our retirement savings accounts instead, given that we would not be receiving any help from anyone else.
Our older daughter freaked out and called us all kinds of names. We still let her live with us rent free, but it is becoming really unbearable living with her and all the animosity she’s showing me and my husband right now.
Look at the tinyyyyy babyyyyyy:
Fred Astaire’s ceiling dance from Royal Wedding is famous, and even though I know how it’s done, his transitions are still flawless. This video showing how the set rotated doesn’t take away from how impressive it is.
TUMBLR!
I’ve actually never watched Bake Off, but I still laughed at this. Should I watch Bake Off?

I’m so glad it’s not just me:
(via grawly.)
Himbo jokes will get me every time:
(via clownfactories.)
Hey, September, please be nice to us:
(I’m having trouble finding the link to the post itself, but I saw it here, and the thread was from idiopathicsmile.)
ARTICLES!
In The Midst of a Race Reckoning, Global News Laid Off Some of Its Most Vocal Internal Critics, Vox — the media landscape is a nightmare anyway, but Canada is obviously especially depressing to me.
A Teen Threw Scots Wiki Into Chaos and It Highlights a Massive Problem With Wikipedia, Gizmodo — for seven years, a now-19-year-old (so he was 12 when he started) edited the Scots wiki thousands and thousands of times, except that he doesn’t speak Scots.

That’s all for me today, gorgeous! Talk to you soon.
