Stop what you're doing and go watch "I Think You Should Leave"
Did you know that Nicolas Cage has a new movie out where he’s trapped in an evil Chuck E. Cheese-type restaurant and has to kill the the anthropomorphic animal robots? It’s called Willy’s Wonderland, and I absolutely watched it and will be writing about it for this week’s bonus issue for paid subscribers. A subscription is just $5 a month, so if you’d like to read that (and help support this newsletter), click below!
I honestly don’t have a ton to say about Tim Robinson’s Netflix sketch show I Think You Should Leave, other than it’s fucking brilliant and hilarious and the second season is out now and why are you still reading this?
Okay fine: Tim Robinson is one of the funniest people on the planet, and his episode of The Characters is one of my favourite things ever. My friends and I will often just yell “I’m RUINED!!!!” at each other.
And his Comedy Central sitcom Detroiters (co-starring the equally hilarious and adorable Sam Richardson) was fantastic and was cancelled far too soon.
And I’m so glad that Robinson has found such success with I Think You Should Leave, to the point that the sketch of him dressed as a hotdog and saying “We’re all trying to find the guy who did this” has become a huge meme.
I don’t want to spoil any of ITYSL’s season 2 sketches for you, so go watch it for yourself, but also you should read Vulture’s excellent profile of Robinson, especially for delightful tidbits like this:
[Keegan Michael] Key was one of Robinson’s first improv teachers at the Second City Detroit. He remembers Robinson as “an extremely eager student, always wanted to push, always wanted to figure out a little more.” Key recalls watching Robinson play Abraham Lincoln sitting in his theater box on the night he was assassinated. “He just played him like a completely uncouth asshole who had never been to a theater before,” Key says. “He just went on and on being disruptive and loud, and [the comedian playing Mary Todd Lincoln] keeps going, ‘Shhh, please.’ At one point, somebody comes to say something to him, and she’s like, ‘Honey, the play!’ And he’s like, ‘This is still going on?!’” Key makes a gunshot sound.
That’s all for me today, gorgeous! Talk to you soon.
Love,
Kat
