Like many people, I mainly became aware of Brian David Gilbert because of the “Unraveled” video series he made for Polygon — basically doing ridiculously deep dives into video games, often on topics that are very silly. I’m not even a huge video game person, but Gilbert is such a great presence and has such an excellence sense of video production that I watched every single one he put out. My personal favourite is trying to use the hero’s journey to explain the Kingdom Hearts video game series. I haven’t EVER played Kingdom Hearts and knew nothing about it going into this video, and yet I loved everything about it:
(I encourage you to look up all the other “Unravelled” videos BDG did for Polygon, because they’re all great.)
But Gilbert’s been putting out hilarious and awesome videos on his own channel, and his publication schedule has wonderfully ramped up now that he’s quit Polygon to focus more on his own stuff. His use of comedy and horror in this video on how to make $20K a month is excellent stuff:
But the video he put out today, which is a departure for BDG in that it’s pure horror with no comedy at all, is truly masterful. There are no jump scares; just pure, building dread, combined with some truly touching emotions in there. It’s essentially a short film rather than just a YouTube video, and it really shows off how BDG is growing and evolving as a content creator. If you haven’t subscribed to his channel yet, you absolutely should.
