"Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun" is super weird, very silly, and VERY funny
Although I’d heard of the Australian sketch group Aunty Donna before, I admittedly hadn’t seen very much of their work until the past week. My main exposure to them was knowing that my boyfriend and his friends saw them at the Just For Laughs festival and thought they were very funny, and that my friend Luke Gordon Field loved this sketch so much that he couldn’t stop singing it to his infant son:
I mean, it is very catchy. The kid will be fine, I’m sure.
If anything, their new Netflix show Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun is even more strange, even more absurdist, but frankly, even more funny. They’re a group that likes to subvert expectations and really play things out to their most bizarre ends. But all three members commit 100% to their weird premises, which is the only way something like this would work at all.
Here’s the opening sketch that should really set the stage for you about what’s to come:
Whether you like the show or not will depend on how you feel about this type of comedy, but it is extremely my jam. I love it. It’s SO goddamn weird but SO goddamn good. I won’t spoil any of the bits for you, but I will say that there is a joke about plural nouns in the first episode that made me and Craig laugh so hard that we had to rewind several times because we kept missing the dialogue that came after it, and we’ve been quoting it to each other ever since.
There are just six 30-minute episodes in the first season, so you can probably binge it all in a day, although we’ve been trying to slowly parcel them out to make the season last longer.
That’s all for me today, gorgeous! Talk to you soon.
Love,
Kat
