"1BR" isn't a great horror movie, but it's better than it should be
I watched 1BR on Netflix the other night, and while it’s not AMAZING, it was a pleasant surprise, in that it was better than I expected!
The initial premise isn’t a new one: A young woman running away from her past rents an apartment in a new city, and then creepy shit happens. Going into 1BR, I thought that I knew exactly what kind of creepy shit was gonna happen and how it would ultimately play out — it seemed pretty predictable, really. But it actually wasn’t! The movie subverted my expectations surprisingly quickly. I was decently impressed with the turn the movie takes, and although the film is clearly limited by its very low budget, I enjoyed what they were able to pull off.
That said, 1BR really struggles because of its lead actress, Nicole Brydon Bloom, who quite frankly isn’t very good in this part. Someone with a little more acting chops could have done some really interesting things here, but Bloom fell flat for me. However, the supporting cast does some good work to almost make up for it, especially from Taylor Nichols, who plays the apartment complex manager.
If you’re into horror, 1BR is worth a watch! It won’t blow you away, but it might surprise you.
